ART EKA AccessMap

Multimodal Accessibility Mapping & Navigation

A new way of mapping cities.

ART EKA is developing maps that describe not simply where places are, but whether and how people can actually reach them—through digital, audio, haptic and tactile spatial information.

ART EKA purpose: Harmonious, relaxed solutions for people of all abilities, focused on improving accessibility, inclusion, quality of life and community.

Travel notice: Conditions, crowds, construction and weather can change. Community reports may be unverified. Follow official traffic signals and current local conditions. AccessMap supplements rather than replaces orientation-and-mobility judgment.

Toronto working pilot

Rosedale Station → Ramsden Park gazebo area

The station and park are documented by official sources. The pedestrian path, curb details and exact gazebo or covered-shelter approach remain unavailable until a physical survey.

1. Search destination and choose origin

2. Choose all requirements that apply

Your selections stay in this browser. They describe route information you want; they are not stored as a medical profile.

Accessibility dimensions—not a universal percentage

High-contrast route and distance overview

This simplified diagram is not street geometry. Distances remain “Not measured” until a field survey records the actual accessible path.

    Tactile Map Studio

Import a Google Maps share link as a location and zoom reference, or use an ART EKA route record. AccessMap does not scrape or reproduce Google tiles. Tactile geometry must come from ART EKA, open data, or separately licensed data.

    Accessible outputs

Proofing gate: This generator creates a simplified BANA-informed draft, not certified Braille or a mobility-safe route. A qualified tactile-graphics/Braille reviewer and people who are blind or DeafBlind must proofread physical output. Field-audit all distances, crossings, seating, washrooms, elevators and entrances.

    A transportable raised-map kit

    1. Portable printer candidate

Canon PIXMA TR150 with battery. Canon describes it as a 4.5 lb wireless portable inkjet with USB charging and an optional battery. Carbon content and paper feeding must be tested with the exact Swell Touch paper and black cartridge before purchase or deployment.

    2. Raised-image heater

Zychem Swell Form machine. It raises black areas printed or drawn on Swell Touch paper. Zychem lists it at about 5 lb / 2.27 kg, but it requires mains power; it is transportable, not pocket-sized or battery-operated.

    3. Consumable

Swell Touch microcapsule paper. Print the simplified master, then pass it through the heater. Test one sheet first: BANA warns that non-carbon ink/toner may not rise and some printers may heat the paper prematurely.

    Digital alternative

APH Monarch. A portable 10-line by 32-cell refreshable Braille/tactile display with 3,840 pins. It avoids consumable paper but is specialized institutional hardware rather than a low-cost printer.

    Digital tactile-map mode

This phone screen does not physically morph. This mode provides semantic feature navigation, audio and optional vibration, a raised-feature visual simulation, a printable swell-paper/embosser master, and hardware-neutral tactile data for future devices.

Use black carbon-based toner on swell paper plus a heat fuser, or send the master to a tactile-graphics embosser. Braille labels must be professionally translated and proofread before distribution.

      Report or confirm current conditions

Reports are timestamped and enter moderation. A single submission never becomes an authoritative accessibility fact.

      Funding and research readiness

      Toronto pilot infrastructure

      Problem

Traditional maps generally describe roads and destinations rather than detailed pedestrian accessibility environments.

      Solution

Personalized multimodal route information, environmental descriptions, audio, haptics, tactile representations and accessibility digital twins.

      Funding use

Software engineering, paid disability-community co-design, field surveying, GIS, tactile research, privacy, security and usability testing.

Nothing About Us Without Us: pilot advisors, testers, co-designers and accessibility auditors should be paid. No partnership or funding is claimed unless formally established.
